I'm reading The Boy Crisis at the moment and in it the writers talk about the dreams and goals we invest in our children, specifically our sons. The dream being sold is to sacrifice yourself in exchange for honour in war or in business, which of course creates a whole host of problems.

One of the ways the authors note that society does this is by celebrating the heroes, of business, war, sports and the arts. What society does not tell us however is that attaining that level of visibility requires massive amounts of sacrifice and an imbalanced life.

Lives that are whole and balanced, I prefer the term harmonious, do not get seen. A balanced social, family, spiritual, work and physical life is not getting you onto the cover of TIME.

But that is the best and most successful life.

What is the goal here? Be kind. Be a good parent. Handed out glasses of water and pieces of bread. Share your life deeply with others. Create good work.
