One word

When we arrived in Cape Town 8 years ago we started the practice of picking a word for the year,

Last year my word was 'build', I needed to build my life and career almost from scratch.

This year, my word might be 'more' or 'nog' in Afrikaans.

It's from one of my favourite children's book, Die land van die groot woord fabriek (the english is Phileas's Fortune)

A story about a poor boy who lives in a country where you have to buy each word you speak. He really loves a girl, but can't afford the words to tell her.

Poor people would have to dig and find discarded words in the trash or catch them with butterfly nets.

And one day he found a word that he saved for a very special moment

'nog' (more).
