The pain...

This short film is of the artist Renoir painting in his old age, his hands are wrecked with incredible painful arthritis. In the film you see his son, Claude, placing the brush in his hands. The other person is Sacha Guitry who made the film and comes into the frame to talk to the artist.

When a young Henri Matisse asked the artist why he kept painting despite the intense pain, Renoir is said to have replied,

“The pain passes, but the beauty remains.”
