discovering or becoming?

Do we discover who we are, truly are, or do we become who we are?

I'm leaning to the latter.

One is an inner journey, seeking the self hidden underneath the piles of dust and rags. And the other is an outward journey, a standing up from underneath the dust and rags.

Trying to dig ourselves out from under our past is immensely complicated and difficult. Who are you in spite of what happened to you, is a tricky knot to undo.

Who you can become because of, and in spite of, what happened to you, now that is a blank canvas.

And I prefer painting to untying knots.
